English. It is upsetting how much my once good knowledge of the English language, in writing and spoken, lessened since my return to Germany in April 2014. These days I have to look up words, their meaning and proper spelling quite often. Back in the States, during my last employment, most often I was the chosen minute-taker at meetings and job trainings. It was also not uncommon for friends and co-workers to approach me, asking for help with the draft of a document or letter. Of course it is much easier to keep up with any language, when you don’t hear and speak anything else all day, wherever you go. But besides maintaining this blog, there is simply no need to communicate or jot down anything in English. With regard to writing posts for this blog I noticed, that my vocabulary has decreased significantly. What to do? Well, I guess it’s time to dig up and dust off my DVD collection, and to start movie nights again. Why not? For example on Friday evenings there’s usually nothing good on TV anyway! Also, I want to take up reading again. Instead of getting books written in German, I will order the English version. That certainly is easy enough to do these days. I should also check out, what my once favorite author Harlan Coban has been up to. I’m sure that I have quite a bit of catching up to do. In addition it would be beneficial to write blog posts regularly, which is more easily done since I started my own random question prompt. Okay. I am aware of the problem, and have several ideas about how to make positive changes. Why am I so adamant about this? Well, I did learn to love the English language during my nearly twenty years in America, as it became a vital part of my daily life. So, there’s the best motivation to keep up with it, don’t you think?
